I have been looking around a few posts trying to find the solution to solve the problem which is going on at the moment, but so far, after trying a few steps, the issue still persists. Same as some others, the search function for my Outlook on Win10 computer started to have issues since that June update which people were discussing about.

Whenever I try to search for an email, only few emails are found, and the dates are inconsistent which some are last week and some are older Interesting enough, even the email that I just received which I used as reference for the search does not show up.

Since this was some issue which slows down a lot of my task, I came to the community to search for some ways to fix or get around found that there was an update that came out yesterday which should fix this issue. I followed the instructions to do the update, but the problem did not get fixed instead it got worse. Right now, when I try to search, it gives nothing besides the message “We couldn’t find what you are looking for” and with the “Find more on the server” option below.

I will have to click on the “Find more on the server” to get search results. Is there something I need to do after the update to get Outlook’s search function to work normal? Or this is something that others are having as well? I thought the update was suppose to fix the issue, but somehow it did not. I am wondering if I had missed something possibly?

Hi Henry, There are many conditions in which Outlook search function stops working which are; Indexing problems, large data issues, data file corruption, and add-ins Outlook not installed properly. If you’ve installed the latest update then click this article for more information to resolve your issue. Was this reply helpful? Yes No. Sorry this didn’t help. Thanks for your feedback. Thank you for providing the article.

After following the steps from the article and the other articles linked within, the result remains the same.

I have checked the indexing options, there are 92XXX items indexed and completed. I did not do the create a new profile part because this is a work computer with only 1 company email profile to use with the installed Outlook , we do not use Mail or Outlook. Did repairing, and search still does not work like how it normally should. Updated office, so now it is showing everything up to date.

The search does not provide anything and I will just have to click on the “Find more on the server” to get results. Also, I just realized that once in a while, the search will have no action at all. Typed something in the search field and nothing happens. How come I am able to see the email right in front of me, but when I type in the key word to search, nothing shows up at all and I will have to find on server? Double check you have all the updates.

Right click the Start button and click Settings. Search for Updates and click Check for updates. In case the updates have installed go to the Control Panel and search for Updates. If you have the updates reboot the machine to make sure they had a chance to take affect. Windows 7 KB Windows 8. If there are items still needed to index it might take some time for it to catch up.

It is a good sign if indexing is working. Make sure there is a checkbox next to all of the items that you want to be able to search. If indexing is completed from Step 1 and you are still not seeing results or you see the message “Something went wrong and your search couldn’t be completed” check to make sure Outlook is selected for Indexing.

If indexing is completed from Step 1 and you are still not seeing results rebuild the Index. There was a prior issue back in March that caused search results not to be returned. If you originally configured Outlook or created a new Outlook Profile in late February or March this could have affected you.

Note: you can keep the old profile and refer back to it if needed. If this is the affecting issue it will not likely get resolved without a new profile. When you follow the steps to create a new profile you can click the check box ” Prompt for a Profile to be used “. When you start Outlook it will prompt you to select which profile to open.

Thank you for the detailed walk through. I have tried both listed options, but it still ended up the same result. I even used the online repair and rebuild index, but result remains the same. After trying all the steps, it still did not make Outlook ‘s search work as normally will. Right now, the search is just returns nothing with “We couldn’t fine what you are looking for.

It seems to me that the search is not finding anything on the computer? Because the option it provides when I do search is “Find more on the server” and clicking it pulls out everything.

The feeling is like the search function is not digging in the right spot, so it just returns nothing and provides that option. Is it possible that there is actually some other thing I should check? Sorry if I sound like going in circles, but the Outlook is just providing these kind of result these days. Thank you very much for your time and help. You can keep the old one to refer to or just add one account to the new one but use this as a way to test and confirm if a new profile will solve the issue.

I probably should have made my prior post a question list and to post responses. For example, if you check Indexing Status in step 1 of the previous post what does it show? Try and use any insight from the previous post if there are any indications there that could help.

Also, if you click into the search box, to the right of it should show Current Mailbox. Change the search scope there and see if changing to any of the scopes and searching a word returns results. I can’t believe this type of service from Microsoft. Since last two weeks we’re facing a trouble in Outlook Search but they aren’t updating us with a fix solution. Released Security update KB doesn’t fix the problem till now.

And the users are still facing headache in search. Kindly do solve the issue ASAP because we are almost tired with this issue. I don’t know how many times I have to write here to get a solution, and you know I don’t have any words left behind to update my users.

I hope they will understand our concerns and release a permanent security patch soon. Are you still seeing the error message “Something went wrong and your search couldn’t be completed”? If that error is gone but search is still not working try the solution mentioned in this forum thread:.

If you try this and it works please let me know. Thanks for your prompt reply. But I found a second way for outlook search, there are two security updates which are affecting the search result. In most of the systems I found this method is working fine but one or two systems we need to do one more step after following the above process.

When a search is performed in Outlook, it almost immediately reports the following And re-add it again. Ceaselessly and pointlessly checking the box called “Allow this file to have contents indexed in addition to file properties” pointless in that it just keeps on checking itself back on regardless.

BTW, why do most online guides suggest doing this? Most, if not all issues I’ve read suggests this box keeps on unchecking itself so I’m perplexed why this is suggested as a fix.
